Previous Thursday Night Activities

This page is meant to be used as an historical archive. The page is a record of Thursday night activities of the sangha starting in April 1999. Items below are copied from the Thursday Nights announcement page as each month ends -- so some items are worded as if they are about to happen instead of having already happened. When we first started this page, we'd lost track of what happened on some dates. If you can fill in any of the blanks below (activity or facilitator), if you know the topic of a discussion where no topic is given, or if you see any errors, please contact webmaster@abqsangha.org. Thanks!

The sangha formed in 1988 or thereabouts. We didn't start this archive till 1999, so many years of activities are missing from this list. Also see Sangha History.

04/12/01 If there are any issues we'd like to discuss that come out of the April 8 teacher selection meeting, we'll do that. Then, if that doesn't take the whole hour, we'll discuss what we'd like to do on Thursday nights. Some things to think about:
  • Do you like go rounds with the talking stick or do you like to keep things looser?
  • Do you like breaking into small groups for some discussions?
  • What topics would you like to discuss on Thursday nights?
  • What guest teachers would you like to invite?
  • Do you like to have guests from other Buddhist traditions or other spiritual traditions?
  • How can we grow our list of facilitators?
  • What should we keep from last year's Thursday Night Guidelines, Working Draft. What would you like to change?
If we spend more than a few minutes on the teacher discussion we'll either postpone the discussion about Thursday nights till some other time or we'll start it and then continue it some other time -- so we'll have plenty of time for both discussions.

08/26/04 Presentation by Mel (Maryhelen) Snyder on Empathy as Spiritual Practice. A couple of our sangha members participated in a day-long workshop with Mel in which she taught a way of enhancing our ability to listen to others with empathy. She calls what she taught becoming -- a process in which one person listens deeply to another and then speaks what they heard back to the listened-to person as if they'd become the person. A back-and-forth dialog is continued in which the listened-to person often feels heard in a particularly helpful and satisfying way. Our sangha members had such a rewarding experience at the workshop that they asked Mel if she would be willing to share becoming with our sangha, and Mel has generously agreed. Empathy is foundational to the compassion and joy-in-others'-happiness-and-success practices that we do. In Mel's presentation you may expect her to elucidate becoming by explanation and demonstration and to offer us the opportunity to practice and experience it in both the listener and listened-to roles. Mel Snyder (not to be confused with our own Mel Schneider!) is a highly regarded psychologist in Albuquerque, a leader in the Quaker community here, and was the key figure in introducing and fostering Re-evaluation Co-counseling to the city. She is knowledgeable regarding Buddhism and has done much deep spiritual work, including years of study with J. Krishnamurti.

05/18/06 Getting to Know Your Sangha. Some of us who have been a part of the AVS for a number of years are happy to see many new faces at our Thursday evening get-togethers and we would enjoy getting to know you - and allowing you to know us - better. Recent-comers: What got you to our Thursday night meetings? What were/are you hoping to find and how might the Sangha better help you meet your needs? Longer-time members: What do you love about our AVS? Are there ways it disappoints you? In addition to our Thursday evening programs and other announced events, many of us "old-timers" find pleasure in our less formal associations and friendships with one another. Association on a regular basis with others seeking to live lives informed and nourished by Dharma can be an invaluable support to living the Dharma. Community has been integral to Buddhism from its inception. Let's think together how we might better serve each other. Tentative format: Small group sharing; large group discussion; time for unstructured socializing. Cookies. Mel Schneider, sangha member.
