Thursday Nights

The Albuquerque sangha meets every Thursday evening, unless noted otherwise below. Everyone is welcome.
Where: The monks at the Wat Buddhasothorn Temple generously allow us to meet in their meditation hall at 145 Madison NE. See directions.
Schedule:
6:30-7:10: Meditation. Please come a few minutes early to get settled before the bell rings at 6:30. (Often, on the third Thursday of the month, the meditation period will extend till 7:30 and the remainder of schedule will be adjusted accordingly. See calendar below for dates.)
7:10-7:15: Stretch break.
7:15-8:00: Dharma talk, discussion, or other activity. For details, see What We'll Do After the Meditation below.
8:00-8:15: Announcements, mingling, put away chairs.
Meditation: If you are new, these meditation instructions may be helpful. Someone will probably offer to give instructions during the meditation.
Bring: 1) If you like to sit on the floor, bring a meditation cushion. (The room is carpeted. There are plenty of chairs.)
2) If we have a visiting teacher, please consider giving dana to the teacher. See Dana section below.
3) If you can, please bring a small optional donation for the sangha so that we may make a donation to the Wat and cover other expenses.
Dana: Dana is a Pali word meaning generosity. According to long tradition, our teachers do not charge anything to meet with us. Voluntary contributions to teachers are gratefully accepted at the Thursday sittings and also at individual practice discussions. If you'd like your teacher dana to be tax deductible, you can make the check payable to Albuquerque Vipassana Sangha and indicate the teacher's name in memo field. We hope that you'll be generous to our wonderful teachers. (For more about dana, here is an essay from the Cloud Mountain Retreat Center site: The Practice of Dana.)
Dinner: If you'd like to socialize before the meetings, come for dinner at 5:00. See Thursday Night Dinners for locations.
Individual
Discussions:
Individual practice discussions (sometimes called interviews) are an opportunity to talk with a teacher in a one-on-one setting about your practice or about other relevant issues in daily life related to meditation practice or ethics. You can ask questions, get advice about practice, and guidance about your overall path. It is appropriate to offer Dana to the teacher for this opportunity. Brian Lesage offers practice discussions when he is here on Thursdays. To sign up, contact Tiska at 256-3785 or tiskaunm.edu. (Be sure to phone, rather than email, if you need a quick response.)
Recordings: Recordings of a number of the talks given on Thursday night are available on our dharma recordings page.
